To drive within the London Low Emission Zone (LEZ), covering most of greater London, a HGV vehicle must meet stringent emission standards that limit the amount of particulate matter coming from its exhaust. Particulate matter (“PM”) or ‘soot’ is a type of pollution that can contribute to asthma, heart and lung disease, other respiratory illnesses and even early death, and particularly affects the young and the elderly of society.

The European Commission estimates that air pollution is responsible for over 300,000 deaths in Europe each year, more than caused by road accidents. Furthermore, the estimated human health cost to the European economy attributed to air pollution is between 427-760 billion Euros per year.

Ever mindful of its environmental responsibilities, Chris Hayter Transport Ltd has embarked on an ambitious programme of vehicle modifications, fitting state of the art Purifier™ e4 systems to its pallet delivery HGV fleet. These are supplied by the UK industry leading specialist technology provider Clean Diesel Technologies Ltd.

The Purifier™ e4 is based on a wall flow diesel particulate filter for maximum performance, to bring vehicles up to the Euro 4/EPA Level 3 standards. When used in conjunction with ‘Platinum Plus’ fuel additive, the Purifier e4 is unique in providing up to 99% reductions in PM, while actually decreasing overall NOx levels, and with no increase in NO2. This makes Clean Diesel Purifier systems especially attractive for LEZ areas with NO2 or NOx sensitivities.

If you want to know more about these policies, you can read about them on our resources page or feel free to contact us.

In recent years, CHT has heavily invested in specialist baling equipment ... such as the CK450 cardboard baler, the consequence of which is that, at ‘Jervis’, we now recycle 100% of all cardboard packaging waste and 100% of its clear plastic wrap, such that CHT have turned what was a operational ‘cost’ to the business into a modest but welcome income stream.

During the 12 months to May 2011, CHT had successfully baled 260+ tonnes of cardboard and 47 tonnes of plastic wrap, with all baled product being collected by a specialist provider on purpose built trailers to be recycled into new / raw material product.

Even ‘general waste’, once normally associated with expensive and wasteful landfill, is now collected by a specialist service provider who sorts the content, claiming an 85% success rate on recyclable material.

CHT will endeavour to source all stationery and janitorial products from renewable and sustainable resources. And as part of the internal routine audits which take place, CHT now include key ‘environmental’ elements as part of its standard site audit, and which aims to measure impact on the environment and with a focus on sustainability.

These well engineered and robust LED lights will save CHT more than 66% of its existing lighting costs, even more through the expedient use of good automated lighting management which we have now installed.

The recent installation of high bay LED lights at ‘Jervis House’ has resulted in improved efficiency, a near zero maintenance lighting system, and a happier workforce as the lighting levels are so much superior to our original sodium lighting just from a straight one for one swap. Staff are happier working during the hours of darkness due to the brighter light and resulting in a nicer atmosphere for all to work in.

CHT are especially pleased to have made an effective contribution to the lowering of its carbon emissions as, by the installation of the new LED lighting system, we have saved circa 134 tons of carbon per year compared to our old system ... a fact we are rather proud of!

CHT will carefully monitor the carbon savings as the year progresses and beyond, as with the intelligent lighting management systems provided, we are on target to save even more carbon, helping to protect both the future health of our business and that of our planet.
In short, we are delighted to have discovered the ‘Dialight’ LED high bay lighting solution ... as recommended and supplied by Interior Control Ltd.

significantly improve the quality of the existing warehouse lighting (moving away from the depressing yellow SON discharge to a much more appealing 'White light');

slash our energy costs; and

reduce our carbon footprint on site.

Meeting this challenge, our system designer from Fitzgerald Industrial Lighting recommended to us the ‘T5’ Superior Warehouse luminaire with sensor control.

Recommending the complete replacement of the existing SON discharge lighting system (... which was effectively switched on at full output for 24hrs a day, 6 days a week, with discharge lamps that required replacing after approx 10,000hrs of useful lighting levels).

Whereas, the newly installed SPW luminaires (‘T5’ Superior Warehouse luminaire) are specifically designed to offer 100% illuminance when presence is detected, fading back to 10% illuminance levels when the task has been undertaken and the area vacated, and yet still leaving an adequate background lighting that provides security and comfort to people working in the building.

We believe that there is nothing worse than staff having to work in an area with all of the surrounding area in total darkness, which can prove intimidating to the workforce. With sensor control, by dimming back to 10% during periods of inactivity, the savings on normal lighting are around 80% of full output. By dimming back rather than 'switch on and switch off' when needed, these SPW lamps will last much longer, offering much higher output through life of around 25,000hrs useful life, meaning that CHT’s maintenance costs are reduced by more than half!

Since installation of the ‘T5’ technology, CHT staff at Skelmersdale have experienced a substantially improved quality of light together with an improved colour perception, making it much easier for them to read labels and see products right up to the top of the racking.

CHT are rightly proud to have helped make an effective contribution to the lowering of its carbon emissions, saving circa 90-100 tonnes of carbon per year compared to our old lighting system, and whilst saving 70% of its existing lighting costs.
